If you need a portable hard drive for backing up media files the WD My Passport Essential 500 GB is best. With proper formatting it will work on both Macs & PCs. Plugging in one USB cable powers the unit making it simple to move. As of this writing including tax and shipping it costs $145 on Amazon.
If you don't plan to move the hard drive around buy the WD My Book Essential 1 TB (yes, I know the names are confusingly similar) for $143. For the same price non-portable hard drives usually have double the capacity of their portable counterparts.
Digital Camera: Buy the Canon PowerShot SD780IS

For $250 a great choice is the Canon PowerShot SD780IS. It takes 12 megapixel images which are more than enough quality for cropping and the camera comes in black, silver, gold and red. Its form factor is small and compact and it takes movies in HD quality.
